Asana lists Starter at $10.99 per user per month. ClickUp lists Unlimited at $7. If that were the whole story this article would be one line long, and the line would say "buy ClickUp."
It isn't the whole story, because in 2026 neither company makes its money on the number you see first. Asana charges you for seats you don't have and meters AI out of a shared pool that belongs to the account. ClickUp charges you almost nothing for the platform and then sells AI back to you as a second per-seat subscription that can cost more than triple the plan it sits on. Two different ways of moving the real price off the pricing page.
So the honest comparison isn't "which tool is better." It's: do you want your AI bill attached to your headcount, or attached to your usage? That single question sorts most teams correctly, and the rest of this piece is the evidence behind it.
Head-to-head at a glance
| | Asana | ClickUp | | --- | --- | --- | | Cheapest paid seat (annual) | $10.99/user/mo (Starter) | $7/user/mo (Unlimited) | | Mid tier (annual) | $24.99/user/mo (Advanced) | $12/user/mo (Business) | | Monthly-billing penalty | ~23% ($13.49 / $30.49) | ~43–58% ($10 / $19) | | Free plan | Personal, capped at 2 users | Free Forever, unlimited members | | Minimum paid purchase | 2 seats, then sold in blocks | Per user, but whole workspace must upgrade | | How AI is billed | Credit pool per billing account (50K–200K/mo) | Second per-seat add-on: +$9 or +$28/user/mo | | Real cost of "plan + full AI" | $24.99 + credit top-ups (~$150/mo per 100K) | $40/user/mo (Business + Everything AI) | | Strength | Predictable structure, portfolios/goals, clean UX | Depth and breadth per dollar; native time tracking | | Weakness | Seat-block rounding, SSO tax, steep Starter→Advanced jump | AI priced like a second product; reliability wobbles |
What each plan actually costs
Both vendors quote annual rates by default. Every number below is the annual, per-user, per-month rate unless stated.
Asana
| Plan | Annual | Monthly | Seat floor | What it unlocks | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Personal | $0 | $0 | 2 users max | List, board, calendar; no Timeline, no forms, no AI Studio | | Starter | $10.99 | $13.49 | 2 paid seats | Timeline/Gantt, forms, custom fields, rules, AI Studio Basic (50K credits/mo) | | Advanced | $24.99 | $30.49 | 2 paid seats | Goals, portfolios, Workload, approvals, 75K credits/mo | | Enterprise | Contact sales | — | — | SAML SSO, SCIM, 200K credits/mo | | Enterprise+ | Contact sales | — | — | HIPAA, encryption key management, data residency |
The rename matters when you read older reviews: Premium is now Starter, Business is now Advanced. Anything still quoting "Premium/Business" is stale.
The seat math is where Asana surprises people. There is no public one-seat paid plan — paid starts at two. Above five users Asana sells seats in blocks: increments of 5 up to 30 users, 10 between 30 and 100, 25 above that. A six-person team buys ten seats. On Starter that's $1,318.80 a year for six people instead of $791.28 — a 67% premium for hiring one person.
ClickUp
| Plan | Annual | Monthly | Notes | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Free Forever | $0 | $0 | Unlimited tasks and unlimited members; 60MB storage, 5 Spaces, 100 automation runs/mo | | Unlimited | $7 | $10 | Unlimited storage, Gantt, custom fields, integrations, native time tracking, goals | | Business | $12 | $19 | Unlimited dashboards, 5,000 automations/mo, workload, Google SSO, granular permissions | | Enterprise | Quote | Quote | SAML/SCIM, audit log, 250,000 automations, HIPAA available | | Brain AI (add-on) | +$9/user | +$18/user | 1,500 AI Super Credits/seat/mo, unlimited AI chat across Claude/ChatGPT/Gemini | | Everything AI (add-on) | +$28/user | +$68/user | 5,000 credits/seat, AI Notetaker, ambient answers, agents, Talk to Text, image gen |
ClickUp's free plan is the most generous in the mainstream category — unlimited members is something Asana, monday.com and Notion all decline to offer. But two structural rules bite later: billing is per Workspace, so if one team needs a Business feature every member of that workspace moves to Business rates, and you cannot run two tiers side by side. And the monthly-vs-annual gap (43% on Unlimited, 58% on Business) is among the widest in the category, which makes "let's try it month to month" an expensive experiment.
The real difference: how each one bills AI
This is the part that decides your invoice, and the two companies have chosen opposite models.
Asana meters. AI Studio credits are pooled per billing account, per month — 50,000 on Starter, 75,000 on Advanced, 200,000 on Enterprise and Enterprise+. Roughly 100 tokens equal 1 credit, with a multiplier per model, and Asana's own formula is ((input tokens × input multiplier) + (output tokens × output multiplier)) / 100. Four things drive burn: model chosen, input volume, output volume, and how often the rule fires. Attachments, linked projects and web access all count as input.
The consequence is one most teams discover late: a single badly-scoped automation running hourly can eat a whole company's monthly allowance. Admins get warnings at 80% and 100%; when the pool is empty, AI Studio rules simply stop running and builders get an email. Top-ups are AI Studio Plus (100,000 credits/month, in-product purchase, roughly $150/month in resellers' published figures, up to 1M credits per purchase, no rollover) or AI Studio Pro (annual, 5 million credits resetting quarterly, with workflows continuing to ~130% of purchase before pausing). Also worth knowing: the general Asana AI teammates allowance is separate and small — 5 requests per user per month, capped at 50 per account on Starter and 250 on Advanced/Enterprise.
ClickUp taxes headcount. No pool, no tokens: Brain AI is $9 per user per month and Everything AI is $28, layered on top of whatever plan you're on, Enterprise included. Multiple pricing guides report the add-on applies to every paid member, not only the people who use it. So a Business seat is $12 on the pricing page and $21 or $40 in practice. Each seat carries a nominal allowance (1,500 Super Credits on Brain AI, 5,000 on Everything AI), so it isn't literally unlimited, but for most humans the per-seat price is the binding constraint, not the credits.
Run it for a 15-person team on the mid tier, annual billing:
| Scenario | Asana Advanced | ClickUp Business | | --- | --- | --- | | Platform only, 15 users | $4,498/yr (15 seats available in-block) | $2,160/yr | | Light AI (pooled/basic) | $4,498/yr (75K credits shared) | $2,160/yr (no AI) | | Everyone gets full AI | $4,498 + top-ups (~$1,800/yr per 100K/mo) | $7,200/yr ($40 × 15 × 12) | | 16th person joins | Jumps to a 20-seat block: $5,998/yr | $2,304/yr, prorated |
Read that bottom row twice. Asana's seat blocks punish growth in steps; ClickUp's AI add-on punishes headcount smoothly but relentlessly. If five of fifteen people will genuinely use AI heavily, Asana's shared pool is the cheaper architecture. If AI is background convenience for everyone and you never want to think about credits, ClickUp's flat per-seat model is easier to budget — until you count the seats.
Where Asana breaks
- The SSO tax. SAML/Okta SSO is gated to Enterprise while Google SSO is free. Asana appears on the public sso.tax list, and a 2026 churn analysis of 25+ public complaints (Hacker News, G2, Reddit) named SSO gating its single largest churn driver. If your security team requires SAML, your Asana price is "contact sales," full stop.
- Seat-block rounding and renewal surprises. Trustpilot cancellation reviews aggregated in April 2026 repeat the same themes: no renewal notice, refunds denied minutes after a charge, and defaults that bill for far more seats than the team has. "The basic plan requires a minimum of two seats, and the pricing is quite unclear" is a representative line.
- The Starter→Advanced cliff. The mid-tier jump more than doubles per-seat cost and gates workload management, portfolios and advanced rules — capabilities ClickUp includes at $7–$12. G2-sourced complaint records single this out as the structural source of resentment rather than any product flaw.
- Tier creep. Enterprise customers report features they bought Enterprise for migrating up to Enterprise+ later. Nothing in the contract promises feature scope stays put.
Where ClickUp breaks
- AI is a second product, priced like one. $28/user/month for Everything AI on top of a $12 plan means the AI costs 2.3× the platform. And because the add-on lands on paid members rather than actual users, you pay for the colleague who has never opened Brain.
- Reliability is visibly noisier. ClickUp's status history in 2026 includes a 22-day "Multiple Features Unavailable" incident starting 31 March, a full-day repeat on 22 April, a login outage on 14 May, and degraded performance events in May, July and September. Third-party monitors logged 2 incidents in a recent 90-day window with a median duration around 1h45. Asana has no comparable public record. This is the complaint pattern behind "ClickUp is slow" — sometimes it's your workspace architecture, sometimes it genuinely isn't.
- Workspace-wide upgrades. One team's need for Business features moves every member of the workspace to Business rates. There is no mixed-tier workspace, and guests can quietly convert into billed members.
- Depth costs setup time. The hierarchy (Spaces → Folders → Lists → Tasks → subtasks → custom task types) is genuinely more powerful than Asana's, and genuinely more work to get right. Consultancies make a living re-architecting ClickUp workspaces that "outgrew" the tool when they actually just outgrew their original setup. Sentiment is broadly positive at scale — 4.6/5 on G2 across ~13.5K reviews, 4.6 on Capterra across ~4.6K, 4.1 on Trustpilot — but the low scores cluster on speed and on billing.
Who should buy which
Buy Asana if:
- You are 2–5 people, or a size that lands neatly on a seat block, and you want Timeline, forms and automations without a configuration project.
- Your work is portfolio- and goal-shaped: cross-project reporting to leadership, OKRs, approvals, workload balancing across teams.
- A minority of your team will use AI heavily — a shared credit pool is cheaper than paying per head for people who won't touch it.
- You collaborate with lots of external contractors: guests on a different email domain are free inside an organization.
Buy ClickUp if:
- You want the widest feature surface per dollar. Native time tracking, goals, portfolios, chat and dashboards at $7–$12 is unmatched at that price.
- Your team is larger or grows unevenly — per-seat proration beats Asana's step-function seat blocks.
- You need one system for everything and have someone willing to own the workspace architecture.
- You can live without AI, or want it for only part of the team — in which case skip the add-on entirely and keep the $7–$12 price honest.
Buy neither if your requirement is SAML SSO on a small budget (both push you to quoted Enterprise pricing), or if your "project management" need is really a knowledge base with tasks attached — that's a Notion-shaped problem.
The pay-for-two case is narrow but real: agencies sometimes run ClickUp internally for delivery depth and keep a small Asana Starter instance as the client-facing surface, because Asana's guest model and cleaner UI survive contact with non-technical clients better. Below roughly 20 people this is usually vanity spend.
Head-to-head matrix
| Dimension | Winner | Why | | --- | --- | --- | | Entry price | ClickUp | $7 vs $10.99, and a free tier with unlimited members | | Price predictability | Asana | Flat per-seat AI-free bill; no second AI subscription | | AI cost at low usage | Asana | Pooled credits beat paying $9–$28 per head | | AI cost at heavy, broad usage | ClickUp | Flat per-seat AI never surprises you mid-month | | Feature depth per dollar | ClickUp | Time tracking, goals, portfolios included cheap | | Reporting for leadership | Asana | Portfolios, goals and Workload are more mature | | Small-team billing fairness | ClickUp | Per-seat proration vs 5/10/25-seat blocks | | Reliability record (2026) | Asana | ClickUp's public incident log is materially busier | | Ease of adoption | Asana | Works well on day one; ClickUp rewards configuration | | Security on a budget | Tie (badly) | Both gate SAML SSO behind quoted Enterprise tiers |
Bottom line
ClickUp is the better platform for the money and the worse platform to buy AI on. Asana is the more expensive platform and the cheaper place to run AI across a team where only some people use it. If you strip AI out of the decision entirely — and plenty of teams should, because most AI project-management features are summaries and status roll-ups you can live without — ClickUp Business at $12 does more than Asana Advanced at $24.99 for most teams under a hundred people.
Whichever you pick, do two things before you sign. Price the invoice, not the pricing page: with Asana, count the seat block you'll actually land on after your next hire; with ClickUp, multiply the AI add-on by every paid member in the workspace, not just the enthusiasts. And pay annually or don't pay at all — ClickUp's monthly penalty alone is 43–58%, which is a bigger swing than the entire gap between the two products.
